Basements

To transform a dark, damp and less than desirable basement into a beautiful and functional space, we need to address several important factors: access, design, finishes, color selection, ventilation, lighting, moisture control, and heating.
Access: First of all, our goal at Crown Construction is to make the basement space "feel" as if it were just another level of the existing first floor area. To overcome the problem of walking down into this space, we recommend you open up the stairwell, either partially or completely, and let us install a railing system. This will immediately open up the basement space and make the transition into the lower level much more pleasing and consistent with the rest of the house.
Design: Normally a basement has at least one carrying beam with several posts to support the house. These need to be incorporated into the room design or redesigning the beam itself can possibly eliminate the poles.
Finishes: By relocating the few pipes and wires, we usually can install a sheetrock ceiling to match the rest of the house. This gives the room the maximum ceiling height and is a major improvement over drop ceiling tiles. Walls should be kept light colored. If you choose paneling, we recommend a chair-rail height, so that we can still keep the top half light and open.
Color Selection: Color selection should be kept consistent with the rest of the house. Neutral, light colors will make the space seem bigger and airy.
Ventilation: Natural light is very important to any room. Windows may easily be installed by using window wells, sliders and awning type windows. For the more adventurous, we can excavate a section of wall and install a French or sliding glass door.
Lighting: We suggest recessed lighting to increase headroom. Floor lamps placed strategically give a warm ambiance.
Moisture Control: To eliminate dampness, we recommend a fully insulated 2x4 wall. If you also have hydrostatic pressure in your floor, there are several progressive remedies such as gutters, sump-pumps, dehumidifiers, drainage tile and wood raised floors.
Heating: To heat the lower level, we usually can tie into the existing heating system. In many instances, we have installed gas fireplaces to provide air circulation, comfort, and a nice aesthetic appeal.
Whether it is an office, bedroom, bath or family area, the basement is sometimes a great choice for adding equity, comfort, and value to your home.
